Fulton County Heads for Possible Legal Showdown with State over Tax Hike
On Wednesday, July 23, 2014, the Fulton County Commission is expected to vote on a proposed tax increase, to plug a budget shortfall currently estimated at more than $40 million. Whatever the amount of the tax hike, a "yes" vote would set up a potential legal collision with the state, because in 2013, the General Assembly passed HB 604, which bans Fulton County from raising taxes until the start of 2015. But Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves thinks the county will win any court battle with the state. WABE's Denis O'Hayer spoke to Eaves, and to Rep. Lynne Riley (R-Johns Creek), one of the sponsors of the tax freeze law.
