Final Wrap-Up: A recap of Atlanta’s impactful stories from 2024

2024 was another busy year at WABE. All eyes were on Georgia as we entered into another contentious presidential election. The deadliest school shooting in Georgia history at Apalachee High School rocked a community. Water main breaks shut down access for Atlantans as citizens demanded answers from city officials. Major hurricanes brought destruction and disruption to Georgia and our neighbors. And during it all, our newsroom worked tirelessly to bring you breaking local news with robust context. We’ve compiled a 2024 recap of local news headlines, photos and quotes below.

WABE brought you the best of Atlanta’s stories on the radio and in podcasts. We explored the city’s food scene with two new podcasts, “Just Sat with Maximilian Hines” and “Savory Stories.” Each week on “Health Wanted,” Laurel Bristow breaks down the science behind trending topics and need-to-know public health headlines. “Closer Look with Rose Scott” spoke with hundreds of organizers and officials over the past year to spotlight what really matters to Atlanta communities. And “City Lights with Lois Reitzes” continued to explore the creative fabric of Atlanta in pop culture, music, theater, dance, visual arts, film, food and much more.

The WABE Studios team launched “My Money Mentors,” where financial experts team up to guide young adults through various financial milestones and challenges, empowering them to make smart money moves for the future. “Atlanta on Film” featured full-length films or a collection of short films by Atlanta-based filmmakers. And season two of “Sounds Like ATL” provided intimate live musical performances, exclusive artist interviews, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into Atlanta’s vibrant music scene.

Here is our 2024 wrap-up of all the impactful stories that amplified Atlanta.
