$3M Approved to Renovate State Welcome Centers

The Georgia Transportation Board has approved $3 million in renovations for eight of the state’s welcome centers.

But that money is not coming from tax dollars but from the Georgia LOGO program which generates funds by selling ad space on signs near highway exits.

The contract specifications are just now being written, but Department of Transportation spokesperson Jill Goldberg says the renovations are likely to be things you don’t actually see when you stop at a welcome center.

According to Goldberg, “Many of these are older facilities, built even in the 60s and early 70s, so they are a bit outdated. They have issues with some of their systems: the plumbing systems, roofing, air conditioning, that type of thing.”

The welcome centers are all on major highways at state lines. A ninth center, near Savannah, is already undergoing renovation in a separate project. An audio version of this story
