The date was August 28, 1963.

And the event at Washington D.C’s Lincoln Memorial would become a historic day for so many reasons.

Mahalia Jackson sang two hymns before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. took to the podium at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Sixty years later, numerous events and gatherings related to this year’s anniversary are planned across the country. Here in Atlanta, The National Center for Civil and Human Rights will present “Let Us March On…” a one-night-only theatrical reimagining of the March on Washington, taking place on May 17 at the Rialto Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Atlanta.

“Let Us March On” was written by acclaimed Atlanta director Nikki Toombs and features Broadway’s award-winning actress Maiesha McQueen as the incomparable Mahalia Jackson.

The two joined “Closer Look” host Rose Scott to talk about their creative processes and what they hope the audience takes away from the performance.
