Governor Deal Launches Skilled Labor Initiative

Governor Nathan Deal launched a new initiative Tuesday to encourage more Georgians to seek training and employment in the state's skilled trade industries.

Governor Deal says as part of the Go Build Georgia initiative his office of workforce development will partner with trade associations, private sector businesses and non-profit organizations.

He says the initiative will help address the skilled labor shortage in the state by educating young people and the public at large about the benefits of the skilled labor trades.

“We must move beyond the stigma of yesterday and get out the message that these trades make sense for many Georgians.”

Deal says during the next year 16,500 jobs will become available in industries that rely on skilled labor. He says the initiative will help ensure those positions are filled by Georgians.

“We want the citizens of this great state to build our airplanes, bridges and automobiles and we need to take the necessary steps to manage our energy and our telecommunications infrastructure.”

Deal says the average skilled laborer currently makes 27 percent more than the average Georgian.
