Drink, Drive & Die; Free Funeral

– New Year's Eve is two days away and the usual reminders about drinking and driving can be found on television, radio and online.

But as WABE's Rose Scott reports, over the last decade, a Rome, Georgia funeral home has had a different approach:

It's called Operation Stop and Think

Actually it's a contract that you sign with the McGuire, Jennings and Miller Funeral Home:

((if anyone comes in and signs it stating that they're drink and or use drugs and drive on New Years Eve, we'll bury them for free when they're killed in auto accident))

Barry Miller is one of the owners.

He says thru New Year's Eve, Operation Stop and Think is available to drivers willing to admit they will drive a car while impaired.

He says it maybe unorthodox but believes the campaign can make a difference:

((just like the title of the program is do the responsible thing that's all we are trying to get people to do))

Miller says no one has ever agreed to the contract nor does he expect anyone to do so in the future.

But if someone does and is killed, the funeral is offering:

((the funeral, the casket, the vault, the flowers, all our services the opening closing of the grave, one grave space and a marker))

That's nearly 15-thousand dollars of burial expenses the family won't to pay but Miller hopes no one will.

Operation, Stop and Think was started when a member of Miller's family was killed by a drunk driver.
