Local allergy experts seeing evidence of more intense allergy season

Local allergy experts say the warm and dry winter has not only led to an early allergy season but one that will likely be more severe. Local allergists like Dr. Stanley Fineman with the Atlanta Allergy and Asthma clinic are already seeing evidence of a more intense allergy season.

“We’re seeing patients now who are having terrible symptoms and they’ve had problems over the last month and half, so it is definitely more intense for their symptoms because of this early and prolonged pollen exposure.”

Fineman says early and prolonged exposure to pollen from hardwood trees like Oak…Birch and sweet gum are responsible. He says it’s due to what’s called the priming effect.

“When a patient is allergic and exposed to that allergen they’ll have an allergic reaction and when they’re re-exposed to that allergen they have an even more intense allergic reaction.”

Fineman says over-the-counter medication might help those who suffer from mild allergies. He says those with more severe allergies may want to seek treatment from an allergist. Fineman also says avoiding the outdoors during peak pollen times, remaining in air-conditioning and washing hair before going to bed could provide some relief.
