New Homeschooling bill changes district enrollment responsibilities
Local school districts won’t be responsible for keeping up with students enrolled in home school programs anymore. The Georgia Senate passed a bill yesterday which hands that responsibility over to the state.
Currently, parents who choose homeschooling notify their school district, which notifies the state. Georgia Department of Education spokesman Matt Cardoza says that creates extra work for the districts.
“Many school districts have to have a person who’s dedicated to that job. To take in homeschooling intent, and run the numbers and do the follow-up that’s necessary,” he says.
The bill gives that responsibility to the Department of Education instead. Cardoza says that will ease the financial burden for school systems.
“There aren’t many things maybe that we can do financially to help school districts right now but Supt. Barge has said where we can help taking away burdens, red tape, other things then we’re going to do that,” Cardoza says.
The change is one of the recommendations made by a commission appointed by Governor Deal to overhaul how the state funds education. The bill now heads to the governor’s desk for his signature.
