Atlanta Welcomes Fans to NCAA South Regionals

Tonight, Baylor takes on Xavier in the first round of the NCAA South Regionals at the Georgia Dome.

Indiana plays Kentucky in the second game.

And that means Atlanta is packed full of college basketball fans.

“No, we’re sold out.  I’m sorry,” a front desk agent told callers who inquired about rooms at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Friday.

The farther away from downtown fans were willing to stay, the more likely they are to find a room.

It was a somewhat different story for fans looking for tickets.

There were a “limited” number of upper level seats still available for $85 each, a Georgia Dome ticket window employee said.

Tom Vonderlieth came from Boston to see the action.  He said getting tickets was “easy.”

“We’re just rooting for some good games,” said Vonderlieth, adding that he’s not rooting for any particular team.

Inside, that wasn’t the case for Norm Boyd.  The John’s Creek resident remained  intensely focused on IU’s practice session.

“It’s going to be a very close game.  I’m sure it’s going to be very entertaining,” said Boyd,  who wore a red jacket with “Indiana” embroidered in white..  ”I hope we can upset them two times this year.”

The “them” is the University of Kentucky.

But Karrie Gabbard of Cincinnati wouldn’t hear of an IU win.

“Cats all the way. For sure.  All the way to the championship,” she said.

This year’s Final Four is in New Orleans.  But next year, Atlanta plays host.

Tickets are already on sale–minimum price: $175 each.
