State Officials Could Raise Speed Limit on I-285
Metro Atlanta drivers frustrated by traffic on I-285 may be pleased by a new plan. The Georgia Department of Transportation is thinking about implementing variable speed limits on the interstate.
It won’t happen immediately, but GDOT is considering a plan that would increase the speed limit on I-285. GDOT Spokesperson Jill Goldberg says the goal is to improve overall traffic flow.
“Sections of 285 or possibly the complete circle of 285, which is 63 miles more or less, would have speed limit signs which are electronically controlled and would adjust the speed as needed to respond to traffic conditions,” she explains.
Goldberg says that means GDOT can raise the speed limit, but it can also reduce it.
“If traffic is flowing freely, it could be to the max speed, which may be 65, it’s currently 55,” she says, “ Or, if traffic is congested we could lower the speed, but keep traffic flowing, just obeying the current speed limit.”
Goldberg says it’s still too early in the process to know the program’s cost or a possible start date.
