Local Reaction to President Obama’s Support of Same-Sex Marriage
As heard on NPR, President Barak Obama is supporting same sex-marriages.
Georgia recognizes marriage as a union only between a man and woman and reaction regarding the President’s comments in Georgia is mixed.
That evolution says Jeff Graham couldn’t come at better time especially since North Carolina passed its constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages.
“We really needed today of all days to hear our President stand with all Americans and state clearly, and unequivocally that loving couples should be allowed the right to marry.
Graham is the executive director of Georgia Equality.
He says president’s comments mean he will not support any efforts to change the U.S constitution to ban same sex marriages or any other federal restrictions.
“If he is doubling down and will become even more vocal and supportive of efforts to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which causes so much discrimination against legally married couples in states where they can do that,” continues Graham.
Not everyone was in favor of Mr. Obama’s comments.
Jerry Luquire is the president of the Georgia Christian Coalition:
“Republicans who would never take such a stand on such a immoral issue, we regret very much that the leader of our country has made that determination,” he says.
Luquire says he does not oppose any contract that designates survivor benefits or restricts end to life decisions but that’s where he draws the line:
“But I don’t want them loring what I have, which is marriage, they’re disrespecting my rights.”
Georgia passed its constitutional amendment prohibiting marriages between persons of the same sex in 2004.
