New Lane Opens on Busy Stretch of Georgia 400
Today, traffic conditions were supposed to improve for southbound commuters on a busy section of Georgia 400.
The Georgia Department of Transportation opened the shoulder between Holcomb Bridge Road and the North Springs MARTA station. This morning at 6:30, commuters were able to use the shoulder as a regular lane on that 5.5 mile stretch of Georgia 400.
GDOT Spokesperson Jill Goldberg says there was some confusion when drivers reached the Northridge exit. There, she says, the shoulder ends, forcing commuters back into the other lanes.
“Then after vehicles merge from Northridge going south on 400, you can re-access the lane, so there’s a short distance there where vehicles are not supposed to be in it,” Goldberg says.
Commuters complained on social media outlets. One WABE listener tweeted he had his longest commute time ever. Goldberg says that’s to be expected the first day.
“I think initially with people just trying to figure out how to use it, overall you might have seen some slight delays,” she says.
Goldberg expects commute times and overall traffic flow in the area to improve once drivers get used to the lane.
