Gwinnett School Board Approves $1.7 Billion Budget
The Gwinnett school board approved a $1.7 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year at a meeting Thursday. In an effort to trim costs, the district will increase student-teacher ratios and leave hundreds of positions vacant.
The Gwinnett County school system is facing an $89 million budget shortfall due mainly to declining property tax revenues.
The board adopted Superintendent Alivin Wilbanks’ budget proposal, which includes keeping two furlough days in place and increasing class size by two students across the district.
The board managed to avoid layoffs, by leaving some jobs vacant. More than 50 positions at the central office and 600 jobs throughout the school system won’t be filled. That will save the school system about $46 million.
Other cost-cutting measures include implementing a hiring freeze and skipping salary step increases for employees based on their years of experience.
