Carroll County Schools to Install Cameras on School Buses
The Cobb County school system was the first metro Atlanta district to do it.
Now, the Carroll County school system is installing cameras on some school buses.
The pilot program is an effort to prevent drivers from illegally passing buses when children are getting on and off.
The cameras are placed on the front and rear driver’s side of the school buses. If a driver passes a bus when the stop arm is down, the camera will capture an image of the license plate.
If the sheriff’s office determines a violation occurred, the driver will receive a notice in the mail. Scott Cowart is the superintendent of the Carroll County school district.
“It’s not about trying to catch somebody doing something wrong as much as it is making the public aware of the importance of stopping for school bus stop arms and what it does to provide a safe opportunity for our students,” Cowart says.
There will be 30 cameras in the first phase of the program, which will begin next week. The program will be funded through ticket revenues.
