Stone Mountain Caretaker

The Confederate Memorial Carving features three confederate leaders of the Civil War. In order they are Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson. The carving is cleaned by Mark Lassiter, a geologist by trade. Once about three years he drives down from North Carolina to make nearly a dozen rappels down the mountain. With each slow descent he removes things like vegetation and wasps nests. He’s also concerned about checking the Dutchmen. A Dutchman is an old sculptors term for a block of rock that’s replaced part of a larger carving. It could have been done as a correction or artistic change.
