Atlanta settles with former CFO

The Atlanta City Council Tuesday approved a more than $130,000 settlement for the city’s former chief financial officer.

At the request of Mayor Kasim Reed, the council voted to give the settlement to Joya C. DeFoor to avoid a lawsuit. However, city officials did not disclose how much DeFoor would have gained by successfully suing the city.

Reed fired DeFoor last October after hiring her 16 months prior. No reason was given for her dismissal. At the time, sources inside city hall told WABE there were concerns.

A major problem dealt with funding for the Atlanta Streetcar project.

Last year, DeFoor told council leaders the city had more than $5 million to spend on the project. However, an audit confirmed that money was spent years ago.

After DeFoor, Jim Beard took over as Atlanta’s CFO.
