Beltline board member says scrutiny continues

Friday was Brian Leary’s official last day as President and CEO of the Atlanta Beltline.

The Beltline board made a leadership change last month after Leary was criticized over misuse of tax revenue that funds the 22-mile long land and transportation project.

Beltline tax money was used to buy wine for Leary’s then fiancee, Atlanta Braves tickets and concessions among other scrutinized purchases. Now, the question is was Leary the only one responsible?

“We’re actually looking at everything to make sure that there’s nothing else out there that we don’t know about,” said Atlanta city councilwoman Joyce Sheperd.

Sheperd is an Atlanta Beltline board member. The Beltline also answers to the city council committee Sheperd chairs. She says Beltline staffers and Invest Atlanta, the group over the Beltline’s special tax district, are trying to determine if others were involved.

Beltline chief operating officer Lisa Gordon is interim director. Sheperd says the board has not found anything on Gordon.

“We determined that she was not directly involved in the expenditures and things that were going on,” said Sheperd. “So, to that point, we’re confident of who she is right now.”

Sheperd efforts are underway to ensure all Beltline employee know how and how not to spend tax dollars.
