DeKalb Makes Strides in Going Green

DeKalb County is saving resources and making money — all at once — in two different ways.

Recycling is now free for all DeKalb County residential customers with curbside service.

County spokesman Burke Brennan says charging residents for recycling bins no longer makes sense in light of potential revenue. “We’ve now reached a point where the revenue that we get from recycling the materials is starting to offset the cost of the bins.”

A different county project is projected to save $3 million in fuel costs over the next eight years.

Brennan says the county is converting landfill gas into compressed natural gas that will power the county’s sanitation trucks. “So the garbage trucks that will be delivering the trash to landfill will eventually be fueled by the very garbage that they’re delivering. “

The county will also sell compressed gas to those who have alternative fuel vehicles with two pumps opening in October.
