16 Georgia Sites Now Ready to Shelter Humans and Pets in Emergencies
In case of a natural disaster, there are now several locations in Georgia that will ready to shelter you and your pet. The newest location will be on the University of Georgia campus.
The shelter will have room for 250 people and, a few miles away, there will be a facility for 250 dogs and 150 cats.
The plan is a result of the federal Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act passed after Hurricane Katrina.
Pet owners will be required to stay at the human shelter if they want the animal shelter to house their pets.
That’s to prevent people from abandoning animals, and it also minimizes the volunteer resources needed.
According to Pete Golden, that is a big component of the potential success of the plan. Golden, an Emergency Operations Coordinator at UGA, says, “Nobody wants to be away from their home, but giving them something to do helps them with their just mental wellbeing: ‘Hey, I can go over and spend the day with my dog.’ We’re going to rely on the owners to do a lot of the actual pet care for their own pet.”
Including the UGA site, there will be 16 shelters in Georgia ready to open if necessary.
