Part 1: Atlanta Public Schools Must Fix $14.4 Million Discrepancy In Budget

The Atlanta Public Schools chief financial officer says adjustments will have to be made in order to fix a $14.4 million staffing discrepancy.

That amounts to 279 positions within the district.

Chuck Burbridge is the chief financial officer for APS.

Now that the school year is in full swing, Burbridge says a more detailed look into the budget revealed some differences in the budget in relation to staff.

“The staffing is little higher than we expected to be which in turn leaves the spending is a little bit higher than we expected to have for staff.”

The discrepancy is not related to this year’s student enrollment, says Burbridge.

So, how does this happen?

Burbridge says it could be a number of reasons.

For example APS hired additional bus drivers after an uproar from parents regarding the removal of bus stops.

Burbridge’s department now must find a solution to submit to the board in order to balance out the $14.4 million difference.

It’s too early to tell whether or not that means a reduction in workforce, according to Burbridge.

He says many of the positions may indeed be necessary and that means the district would need to move around money as opposed to moving out employees.
