Gwinnett Voter Registration Drive Targets Asian-Americans

Gwinnett County has the largest Asian-American population in Georgia. And activists are hitting the streets of Gwinnett this weekend to try to increase the Asian-American presence on the voter rolls.

Volunteers with several organizations will go door-to-door in Gwinnett’s Asian-American neighborhoods Saturday to register new voters. They’ll also have seven registration sites set up, mostly at local stores that cater to their target population. On Sunday, the volunteers will visit religious centers with registration sheets in hand.

The goal is to increase the number of Asian-American voters to reflect the local population more accurately. One of the groups working to get out the vote is the Asian-American Legal Advocacy Center (AALAC).

According to Alice Kim, AALAC’s Director for Civic Engagement, “Many of the Asian-Americans have very high educations, but for whatever reason, they are not going out and actually voting.”

The goal this election season is to register about 1900 new Asian-American voters.
