“Run” Saturday for Bone Marrow Registry Awareness

On Saturday morning, some 650 people are expected to participate in the ‘Be the Match’ Walk and Run at Atlantic Station.

The annual event is meant to raise awareness and funds  for the national bone marrow donor registry. You can also sign up for the registry at the event.

Every year, thousands of patients with blood diseases like lymphoma, leukemia and sickle cell anemia need life-saving bone marrow transplants. But as Tiffany Friesen of the Be the Match foundation explains, only 3-out of 10 people find a donor in their family. “Most people who need a transplant have to come to be the match registry to find a donor. And then your likelihood of finding someone to donate to you is directly connected to your racial and ethnic heritage.”

Friesen says because of this, they encourage everyone to join but are particularly focused on ethnic diversity.
