Kids who aren’t quite ready for kindergarten could get a boost from a summer program. The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning offers a six-week transitional program for rising kindergartners.
Susan Adams, the department’s assistant commissioner for pre-kindergarten, says students have to meet income eligibility to attend the federally-funded program.
“It’s intended to target children that either weren’t served in the Georgia pre-k program or Head Start program this year or children that may have attended but need additional support to be successful in kindergarten,” Adams says.
In the program’s first three years, Adams says research shows most students made academic gains. In addition, Adams says the program helps parents find jobs, food, and clothing.
