Persistent Streetcar Construction Causing Frustration

Atlanta Streetcar officials Wednesday delivered their monthly update on the project in downtown Atlanta.

Many who attended the public meeting were owners of businesses along the proposed streetcar line.

Utility work has delayed the project 6-8 months and some business owners voiced frustration with the continued disturbance.

Kim Kleisner, general manger of the Ellis Hotel, wanted to know when the persistent jackhammering would stop.

“It affects our entire hotel because you’re on Peachtree (Street) and you’re on Ellis (Street),” said Kleisner. “We’re rebating people left and right.”

Kleisner was told construction near the hotel should be wrapped up by early summer.

The streetcar project is a joint effort led by the city, Central Atlanta Progress, and MARTA.

Streetcar spokesman Reese McCranie said the city is working with each individual business to address concerns.

“We’re looking for ways to actually make this a more comfortable construction experience. Any time you have construction there’s going to be some disruption but we don’t anticipate challenges that we can’t overcome completely.”

McCranie said heavy construction should be done by the end of the year. The streetcar should be operational by spring 2014.
