Oglethorpe University President Says It Will Take More than New Board Members to Fix DeKalb Schools

  Georgia Governor Nathan Deal’s recent move to suspend and replace six members of the DeKalb County Board of Education will do little to change the results in the classrooms.  

At least that’s the argument from Oglethorpe University President Lawrence Schall. His recent op-ed in Maureen Downey’s Get Schooled blog in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution prompted hundreds of responses, including a detailed reply by an unnamed DeKalb County teacher.Broadcast VersionExpanded Version

Dr. Schall, who has been involved with the Drew Charter School, as chair of the board of the East Lake Foundation, argues there is no single fix for broken systems.  

But, in a conversation with WABE’s Denis O’Hayer, he said it starts with great teachers and administrators, and political will from lawmakers.
