City Beefs Up Safety Plan for Peachtree Road Race

 

The 44th Peachtree Road Race will go on… with enhanced security.

Two weeks after the Boston Marathon bombing, the city of Atlanta announced its intention to beef up security for its biggest road race on July 4.

Atlanta Track Club executive director Tracey Russell has been working with Mayor Kasim Reed to make sure there are no gaps in the overall security plan.

“Safety is the Atlanta Track Club’s top priority for each of their events,” Russell said at a joint press conference.

“Together with the city of Atlanta, we have comprehensive plans in place to insure the safety of our participants, volunteers and spectators on July 4.”   

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner  says they’re planning to have additional state and federal resources in place. 

“We are adding increased resources in our swat team as well as our video integration centerd We’re adding additional cameras on the Peachtree corridor as well as providing additional canine dogs for sweeps.

Mayor  Reed also asked everyone to be diligent and if they see or know something related to the race to share it with authorities.
