Gwinnett County Joins Lawsuit Against FAA

Gwinnett County is joining a lawsuit filed against the Federal Aviation Administration. The lawsuit is in response to the administration’s plan to close the air traffic control tower at Gwinnett County Airport at Briscoe Field as a result of federal sequestration.

The lawsuit was originally filed by an airport facing the same thing in Spokane, Washington. Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash says the county is joining the lawsuit to protect the county’s interests.

“It keeps the door open on the issue in terms of the administrative procedures that FAA is supposed to follow. There are questions about how they procedurally went through the process to make the decisions on the tower closings.”

However, Nash is hopeful the FAA will find money to keep the tower open as a result of recent actions taken by Congress to free up money for the administration. Earlier this month, the FAA announced it would delay the closures of more than 140 air traffic control towers until June 15 while it works to resolve legal challenges.
