Middle East Company Coming to Murray County

A Dubai-based company is bringing money and jobs to Northwest Georgia. WABE's John Lorinc has the story.

A flooring company from the Middle East is setting foot in Northwest Georgia.

Mattex, a carpet-backing producer based in Dubai, is opening a manufacturing facility in Murray County.

“Mattex’s selection just confirms that Georgia’s a great place for international companies to grow,” says Gretchen Corbin, with the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

Corbin says the Peach State supplies 90% of the U.S.’s carpet market and 54% of carpet exports.

“So between logistics, the workforce and an intact supplier and customer base in Northwest Georgia, it’s a perfect location for a flooring business.”

Mattex is planning to invest $60 million dollars in the Murray County plant.  It will also bring about 200 jobs to the area.

Both of those numbers might expand in the future.

“You know, existing industry is where Georgia sees the majority of its growth.  So now that Mattex is one of Georgia’s existing companies, we expect it to grow and grow throughout the years,” says Corbin.

Construction is scheduled to begin this summer.

The plant could be open for business sometime in 2014.
