Two Rabid Raccoons Reported in DeKalb County

Two raccoons with rabies have been discovered within a few miles of each other in northern DeKalb County.

One of the rabid raccoons was found in Brookhaven, the other in Chamblee, after the animals came in contacts with residents’ dogs.

Xan Rawls, Director of DeKalb Animal Services and Enforcement, says there isn’t a major rabies problem in the county.

But you can help protect yourself by taking steps to keep wild animals from coming in contact with your pets by picking up the outdoor pet food and not encouraging animals to congregate in great numbers.  Rawls also says it is imperative to make sure your pets are vaccinated.

These are the first two cases of rabies identified in DeKalb County this year. Last year, there were six cases reported in the county.
