Atlanta Police Increasing Presence on BeltLine

Expect to see more police officers throughout the city of Atlanta, including Buckhead and the Atlanta BeltLine. The Atlanta Police Department wants to tighten its presence on the Atlanta Beltline. WABE's John Lorinc reports.

“We just really want to be proactive.  We’re not going to sit still and watch people be preyed upon.  That’s a really important thing,” says Atlanta Police Department spokesman Carlos Campos.

Campos says the city is forming a special unit called the APD Path Force.

“It’s going to consist of 20 police officers whose job is to patrol the BeltLine and also assist with other park areas.”

In addition to beefing up its numbers along the BeltLine, city officials have also recently fixed and added lights to the area in an attempt to cut down on crime.

“It’s in our mission statement, and that’s pretty much why, you know, the APD exists,” says Campos.

Campos says major crime in Atlanta has dropped nearly 20% since 2009.
