Top Official for State Democrats Again In Legal Trouble

The head of the state Democratic Party is once again in legal trouble.

Party chair and practicing attorney Mike Berlon is the target of a civil suit claiming he mishandled nearly $1 million from a trust he helped set up for a friend.

It comes just days after the state Supreme Court approved Berlon’s voluntary reprimand for violating professional ethics rules.

Nikema Williams, the party’s vice-chair, said she was surprised to hear about the lawsuit in wake of his earlier trouble.

“It was a great opportunity to make sure we were aware of everything that could have potentially been pending so it was definitely a surprise,” said Williams.

Berlon recently told the Atlanta Journal Constitution the complaint is the result of “miscommunication.” He said he plans to carry out the remaining two years of his term.

Steve Reilly, party chair of the 7th congressional district, said Berlon deserves the benefit of the doubt, but added, “if the allegations are accurate, does there need to be some significant change at the top? Yes, obviously there would need to be.”

Party leadership says they will meet in the next week to discuss the matter.
