GDOT Seeks Public Input for Rail Proposal

There may one day be rail service between Atlanta and Charlotte. WABE's John Lorinc reports.

Development is already underway for a high-speed rail corridor between Washington D.C. and Charlotte, NC.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is looking at a proposal that would extend the high-speed corridor to Atlanta.

Officials with GDOT say the current infrastructure between Atlanta and Charlotte is outdated.

They say improving the possible connection is intended to ease traffic and lessen pollution between these two southern cities.

“(It’s) another tool in the toolbox for moving people throughout the corridor, whether that is in a commuter aspect, whether that is a personal matter, using it as a day trip sort of way.  We’re just trying to be innovative in using different methods to move people throughout these corridors,” says GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale.

Starting next week, the public is invited to three public meetings.  They will be held in Suwanee, Greer, S.C. and Charlotte.

Those who can not attend in person can also participate at a virtual meeting that will be up online from June 5 through July 4.  [web address to be announced]

“We’re looking at the details and talking to people in that region to see what the need is, if there is a need….if it were to come to fruition.  It’s their region, it’s their project and so it’s very important that citizens get out and let us know what they want the project to look like,” says Dale.

The goal is to have the service running by 2025.
