Flowery Branch Mayor Mike Miller says Wednesday’s rainy forecast was all it took to enact emergency measures because the city is still fighting road problems caused by heavy rains back in May, telling WABE, “Until all this rain’s gone, and I’m comfortable that there’s no more threats of bridges and culverts washing out, then we’re going to keep it in place.”

Part of Cantrell Road is closed. Spring Street is also closed. Thursday, crews installed a temporary bridge on Spring Street. The city had been trying to purchase a temporary bridge since the problems started in May but found one available only this week.

That bridge is the only way out for residents of a 50-unit apartment complex. And Miller says declaring a state of emergency allowed him to sign the contract to get the bridge installed, “and it also allows us to mandate evacuations should that become necessary.”

With the rain moving out, Miller says he hopes he will be able to lift the state of emergency early next week.
