Georgia Faces Challenge in Enforcing New Law Against Elderly Abuse

The recent criminal charges against staffers at an Alzheimer’s care facility in Commerce, Georgia have raised the question of whether state officials have the ability and resources to prosecute elderly abuse cases.  On July 2, 2013, WABE’s Denis O’Hayer spoke with the House and Senate sponsors of a new state law, which toughens the criminal penalties for some elder abuse crimes.  But, to find out if the resources are there to enforce the new law, he spoke with Kathryn Fowler, the executive director of the Georgia Council on Aging.
