State Reminds Child Care and Pre-K Programs About Safety Policies After School Shooting

Following Tuesday’s school shooting  incident at McNair Discovery Learning Academy, state officials are asking those in charge of Georgia’s youngest children to make sure they’re prepared in case of a similar incident.

The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning is reminding thousands of Georgia child care centers and Pre-K programs about department policies when it comes to emergencies. Those policies include: monthly fire drills, having an evacuation plan and regular drills for tornadoes and emergency situations. Reg Griffin is a spokesman for the department.

“I think every child care provider in Georgia anytime something like this happens needs to stop and take very serious look at their location.”

Griffin says that includes programs informing parents about emergency policies and procedures.

“Take the time when there’s not an emergency to sit down and explain what happens in case of an emergency, and the expectations we have from parents.”

He also says programs should examine the best ways to contact parents if an incident occurs.

No one was injured in Tuesday’s shooting.
