Georgia Reenacts Major Civil War Battle

The Blue Gray Alliance

One of the most significant battles during the Civil War is being remembered in Georgia this weekend.

“It was the bloodiest two-day battle in the entire Civil War,” says state senator Jeff Mullis.

Roughly 10,000 people are expected to recreate the Battle of Chickamauga.

That’s the first major battle in the Civil War that took place on Georgia soil.

“It’s a great educational experience to see how soldiers back in the Civil War days camped, how they survived, how they lived.  You know, how they suffered as well too, on both sides,” says Mullis.

The Blue Gray Alliance is partnering with Walker County to host this event.

The battle was the most significant less by the Union, forcing its soldiers to retreat to Tennessee.

A number of notable historic figures took part in the Battle of Chickamauga, including future president James Garfield and others.

“You had Dick Cheney’s great-great grandfather, who was with the Ohio division, the general who later would kill Geronimo,” says Mullis.

The commemoration runs through Sunday.
