No Significant Changes in Georgia SAT Scores

Georgia students’ 2013 SAT scores didn’t change much from 2012. And some local school districts exceeded the national average.

Georgia’s overall average SAT score stayed the same at 1452 out of 2400 possible points. That’s about 46 points below the national average.

Georgia Department of Education spokesperson Matt Cardoza says that’s partly because a large number of Georgia students took the test.

“Even right next door in Alabama where they test very, very few kids, their composite score is much, much higher than ours,” Cardoza says. “Well, many times that’s because their highest-performing kids are the ones taking it. Where in Georgia, again, we had 75% of seniors taking this test.”

That compares to 43% nationally. But one metro Atlanta district bucked the trend. The Fulton County Schools had some of the highest scores in the region and superintendent Robert Avossa says 80% of students took the test.

“We have invested pretty heavily in SAT preparation programs and courses for our kids,”Avossa says. “We’ve got them peppered throughout the school district with an emphasis on schools that have seen lower scores.”

Fulton County was followed closely by the Gwinnett and Cobb county school districts.
