On Tuesday, a large crowd at the Arena a Gwinnett Center got a chance to hear from the Dalai Lama. His holiness is in Atlanta for his third visit as Presidential Distinguished Professor at Emory University.

During his talk, the Dalai Lama focused on secular ethics and their role in creating a more peaceful world. He says secular ethics are ethical principles which can appeal to those who are religious and non-religious.

“Moral principles are really most important for a happy life, for a happy humanity.”

And to teach those principles, the Dalai Lama recommends instilling them in our education system.

“Through education we can bring firm conviction into people’s mind.”

He also says real change will not come from the United Nations or the government.

“Change must start from individual.”

The Dalai Lama then said it’s up to people to talk to each other, because he says problems can be solved through dialogue.

During the next two days, the Dalai Lama will spend time on Emory University’s campus speaking with students, faculty and the public. The Dalai Lama last paid a visit to Emory in 2010.
