Urban League of Greater Atlanta Wins $965K in Grants

The Urban League of Greater Atlanta has just won nearly $1 million in grants as part of a nationwide push to increase graduation rates and reduce unemployment.
The National Urban League calls it the “Jobs Rebuild America” initiative. Nationwide, it means $100 million in grants. The Urban League of Greater Atlanta is getting $965,000 of that for three of its existing programs. A broadcast version of this story
Its president, Nancy Flake Johnson, says those programs would not be able to continue without the funding: “Done. Not happening. So all of these young folks would continue to do what they were doing when we found them, which for the most part was being frustrated, spinning their wheels, not being productive, wanting more, not having the ability to navigate.”
The money will go to a jobs training and placement program for teenagers and young adults, a program at Benjamin E. Mays High School that that works to ensure graduation and job readiness, and the organization’s Entrepreneurship Center.
