Georgia Trust Releases 2014 “Places in Peril” List

Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation

Four antebellum homes in middle Georgia’s Troup County are getting some attention because they’re in dire need of restoration.

They’re part of the 2014 Places in Peril list just released by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

The Trust’s executive director, Mark McDonald, says the Greek Revival style homes, built between 1830 and 1850, may be the most endangered properties on this year’s list. “They’re out from the city,” says McDonald. “One of them has an industrial zoning now, which means that a chicken processing plant could go there and it’s kind of hard to fit that in an antebellum historic house. So they’re gonna be a challenge.”

The Trust is partnering with the Troup County Historical Society to try to save the properties.

Also on this year’s list is Griffin’s old City Hall building and the site of a Civil War prison camp in South Georgia. To view the complete list, visit georgiatrust.org.
