Reed Ready To Push For Same-Sex Marriage Across Georgia

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says he’s ready to push for same-sex marriage statewide.

At a press conference Wednesday, Reed said Atlanta had to be an example to other cities on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender rights before he could push statewide for same-sex marriage. As heard on the radio

“I didn’t feel that it was appropriate, candidly, without having our own house in order to start talking with other folks,” Reed said.

And now that Human Rights Campaign has awarded Atlanta a perfect score in a survey gauging cities’ LGBT friendliness, he says he has a platform to do that.

It’s an evolution for Reed on the issue, having come out in support of same-sex marriage less than a year ago, after years of opposing it in favor of civil unions. Reed says his coming out in support of same-sex marriage took too long, but says he’s now committed to speaking in favor of it across the region.

“I’m committed to speaking up as early and as often as I can all over the South and all across America.”

Georgia currently has a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
