“It’s a cat and mouse game at many levels with the thieves always one step ahead of the good guys,” says Scott Mitic, a senior vice president with Equifax’s consumer credit division.
But consumers can limit their vulnerability. Equifax recommends:
- When you’re out shopping, keep only the cash and credit cards you need. Leave others at home, along with your social security card.
- When buying online, be wary of Wi-Fi, which thieves can intercept to steal passwords and payment info. Wired or encrypted connections are safer.
- Also, scrutinize requests for charitable donations. Scam artists know many of us are in the giving spirit, which puts them in the taking spirit.
- Finally, check your credit report and bank and credit card statements. If you suspect fraud, alert the three credit bureaus immediately. Federal law requires they investigate and remove any inaccurate information.
“A little bit of caution, a little bit of inconvenience will pay off big down the road,” says Mitic.
