Grady Football Team and Coach Under Investigation

The Atlanta Public Schools is investigating a complaint that alleges address fraud and recruitment of football players at Grady High School. During a Monday press conference, APS superintendent Erroll Davis said,  “We take all such complaints seriously. We are taking swift and appropriate action to protect the integrity of our athletic and academic programs.”

At least 1/3 of the team’s approximately 60 players are under investigation. Davis said, “certainly not all of the students use the exact same address, but enough of them did to raise a significant red flag for us.”

The investigation was prompted by an anonymous written complaint the district received on November 7. Davis says Grady’s head coach, Ronnie Millen, has been transferred to another assignment while the investigation is underway. Students that are part of the investigation are still attending school at Grady.

Parents  signed affidavits swearing students live at addresses zoned for Grady High School. If officials discover they used an inaccurate address, Davis said parents could face criminal charges. If students are found guilty of using an address they don’t live at, their college scholarships are potentially at risk, and they could be transferred back to schools near their actual addresses.

The district has notified the Georgia High School Association about the investigation. Davis said he hopes to have the investigation wrapped up by the end of winter break.
