Georgia Group Offers to Recycle Christmas Trees

Keep Georgia Beautiful

Are you looking for a “green” way to get rid of your Christmas tree?

The annual “Bring One for the Chipper” event is being held this weekend.

“This is actually the largest Christmas tree recycling program in the nation,” says Kanika Greenlee, with the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation.

On January 4, more than 300 locations across the state are collecting used Christmas trees and recycling them into mulch.

“We do ask that it is your bare, naked tree.  Remove all the lights and decorations from your trees,” says Greenlee.

This is the 23rd year the program has taken trees and fed them to the chipper.

The mulch from the trees is later used for things like state playgrounds and government-supported beautifying projects.

Some of the mulch can even end up in the backyards of those who donate their trees.

“It’s a little more acidic mulch, so it’s not the type of mulch you would necessarily find in your nursery and gardening centers.  But it’s good for nature trails, weed control and a base for landscaping,” says Greenlee.
