SCAD Buys 14th Street Playhouse from Woodruff Arts Center
The Woodruff Arts Center has sold the 14th Street Playhouse to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
The price tag was $1.9 million, and the deal closed on New Year’s Eve.
Spokesman Chuck Smith says SCAD is buying the playhouse so it can stage events for which the school has previously had to rent space in midtown Atlanta. “We’ll showcase student productions, scholarly lectures, community programming, signature SCAD events and things like that.”
The Woodruff Arts Center bought the property two decades ago from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta for one dollar. And now Woodruff is turning that back around. According to Woodruff spokesman Randy Donaldson, “We’re donating a million dollars to the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta so that they can use that to support the arts, and then the remaining proceeds from the sale we’re going to use here at the Woodruff but also to support artists in the community.”Broadcast audio of the story.
The Foundation says it will start a new fund with the money to support performing arts nonprofits including subsidizing performance space.
SCAD says it will honor the contracts of performances already confirmed for the space. The playhouse’s current schedule runs through mid-February.
