Dangerous Deep Freeze Coming
Some very cold weather is on its way to a large part of Georgia, including Atlanta.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a series of hazardous winter weather warnings for North and Central Georgia. Following rain on Sunday afternoon, temperatures will drop and the rain is expected to turn into sleet and then snow. Some accumulations are possible.
This will be followed by a bitterly cold air mass with strong winds that will cause temperatures to plummet into the teens and even the single digits on Monday and Tuesday. Strong winds will drive the temperatures even lower.
By Tuesday morning, temperatures combined with wind chills are expected to hit as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit along a line from Columbus to Warrenton. In north Georgia, wind chill may drive the temperature as low as 10 to 15 degrees below 0 Fahrenheit.
The National Weather Service’s seven-day forecast for the Atlanta area follows:
Sunday: Mostly cloudy. A 30 percent chance of showers in the afternoon. Highs in the upper 40s. South winds 5 to 10 mph.
Sunday Night: Snow…sleet likely with a chance of rain in the evening…then a chance of snow…rain and sleet after midnight. Windy. No snow and sleet accumulation. Lows in the mid 20s. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph increasing to northwest 15 to 25 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation 70 percent. Wind chill readings around 10.
Monday: Sunny. A 20 percent chance of snow in the morning. Windy…colder. Highs in the upper 20s. Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph.
Monday Night: Clear…windy…colder. Lows around 7. Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph.
Tuesday: Sunny. Highs in the upper 20s.
Tuesday Night: Clear. Lows around 15.
Wednesday: Sunny. Highs in the lower 40s.
Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy. Lows in the upper 20s.
Thursday: Mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain. Highs in the mid 40s.
Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of rain. Lows in the mid 30s.
Friday: Mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain. Highs in the lower 50s.
