Windy Weather Leads to Less Ice on GA Roadways

Georgia is among the states feeling the frigid winter weather that is covering much of the country this week.

But so far, the roadways have been relatively ice-free.

“The good thing is, we had a lot of wind.  And that wind seemed to dry things out pretty quickly, before they had a chance to freeze.  For the most part, we had a very uneventful event,” says Mark McKinnon, a spokesman for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

GDOT reports there were scattered reports of icy patches throughout metro Atlanta early Monday morning, but overall the commute was smooth.

The National Weather Service reports chilly temperatures—-some areas should expect record-lows—–will remain in Georgia over the next few days.

However, GDOT says it doesn’t expect to need extra workers on hand.

“I think the worst thing that’s going to happen is that our people will have to work out in the cold weather, like a lot of other folks have to do.  That’s going to be tough on a lot of people across this area who are not used to this kind of cold.  But as far as the roads go, I think we’re in good shape,” says McKinnon.

GDOT has more than 25,000 tons of salt on hand and McKinnon says very little was used Sunday and Monday.

He says that means the state should have enough to last the rest of the winter.
