Druid Hills Baptist Church May Sell Part of Property

The Druid Hills Baptist Church might be selling some of its property.

A proposal, calls for turning part of the historic church’s real estate—-along the corner of North Highland and Ponce Avenues—–into street retail, religious facilities, office space and multi-family residential structures.

Kronberg Wall Architects has put in an application for rezoning of the lot.

“We are in very preliminary stages of site layout as well as initial design sketches,” says Leslie Ellsworth, the project manager of Kronberg.

The plans will not affect the 100-year-old church itself, according to Ellsworth, but a neighboring Montessori school and other buildings might be torn down.

“It is an opportunity to bring a denser, more pedestrian-friendly type of development to Poncey-Highland.  The plans that have been presented consistent, both with our neighborhood masterplan and really with the division for in-town living in Atlanta,” says Rob Brawner, the president of the Poncey-Highland Neighborhood Association.

Brawner says the lines of communication have been open with the church and the people who live in the area.

“The church has been very receptive to feedback from the neighborhood and making tweaks as necessary to make sure that it fits in with the community as well as possible.  So we are very optimistic about this being a win-win.”

The church’s pastor Rev. Mimi Walker was unavailable to comment on this story.

A tentative completion date for the project is set for early 20-16.
