Georgia Unemployment Rate Drops in December

“A lot of it has to do with season hiring, some of it is permanent jobs.  But overall, it’s an improving economy and improving jobs picture,” says commissioner Mark Butler.

The DOL says its “Special Workforce Assistance Team” is also helping unemployed people find work.

“Right now, we’ve been specializing in meeting with individuals right before job expos, making sure they, so to speak, have all their ducks in a row.  That their resume is filled out correctly, or have a good snapshot of where they are.  They might need to go back and get some additional training,” says Butler.

The overall number of unemployed workers dropped to just under 350,000 last month.

That’s a low not seen since October 2008.

Despite the increase, Georgia’s unemployment rate is still above the national average, which is 6.7%.
