Snow And Ice Close Roads, Schools, Offices

This last update covers schools closing on Thursday, January 30.  

The winter storm that dropped between one and three inches of snow on north and central Georgia yesterday is now closing many roads, schools, and offices. 

We are compiling lists of closures and delayed opening, which we will post below.  Be sure to check back regularly for updates.

  • University of Georgia: says it will make a determination about opening on Thursday no later than 6:30 a.m. tomorrow morning

Update 6:30 p.m.

Agnes Scott College: Closed Thursday.

Atlanta Judicial Circuit Courts: Closed Thursday.

Atlanta Public Schools: Closed Thursday.

City of Decatur: Government buildings will open at noon on Thursday. “This includes City Hall, the Design, Environment and Construction division of Public Works at Talley St. and the Decatur Recreation Center. Evening activities at the Recreation Center are cancelled for tomorrow night, and the center will close early.”

“Trash & recycling pick up is expected to have a delayed start time of 10 a.m. tomorrow. If sanitation crews can safely get to your rear yard they will pick up trash tomorrow. If they cannot, they will pick it up next week. Please use good sense when deciding if it is safe to put your recycling bin by the curb. If your driveway is too frozen to safely move your bins leave them until next week’s pick up.”

DeKalb County: Administrative Offices will be closed Thursday, Jan. 30. “This includes Parks and Recreation facilities, senior centers, water billing offices, Recorders Court and other administrative divisions. Payroll functions will occur without delay.  The county will return to regular operations and normal business hours on Friday morning.”

Henry County Schools: Closed Thursday.

Morehouse College: Closed Thursday.

Update 4:50 p.m.

DeKalb County Schools:  the DeKalb Co. Schools will be closed again on Thursday.

Georgia General Assembly:  both the Georgia House of Representatives and the Georgia State Senate will suspend their legislative sessions tomorrow “in support of Governor Deal’s request that Georgians remain at home so that first responders can focus their efforts on transporting children from schools to home and on providing relief to stranded motorists.”

Gwinnett County:  The Gwinnett County Police Department recommends that residents of the county who may have abandoned a vehicle on a road during the snowstorm should wait until Thursday afternoon, January 30, before trying to retrieve that vehicle. Temperatures are supposed to warm considerably by then, making retrieval safer. Any abandoned cars that present a road hazard will be towed; those not posing a hazard will not be towed. Towed cars will be taken to the impoundment lot of the company that towed the car, not to a police lot. No mention was made of the cost of towing.

Update 3:40 p.m.

  • Emory University:  Emory will be closed on Thursday.

Update 2:15 p.m.

  • Atlanta:  the City of Atlanta’s offices will remain closed on Thursday, January 30.
  • Fulton County:  Fulton Co. offices will be closed on Thursday.
  • Atlanta:  the Atlanta Judicial Circuit courts will all be closed on Thursday.  This applies to the Superior, State, Juvenile, Magistrate, and Probate courts.

  Update 1:55 p.m.

  • MARTA:  MARTA has suspended bus service and Mobility service (paratransit) until further notice due to the condition of the roads. Rail service is operating, but with delays; plans are to keep increasing the number of trains until service resembles that of a regular Sunday. Red Line trains are now terminating at Lindbergh Station; Green Line trains are now terminating at Vine City Station.
  • Cobb County Schools:   Cobb Co. schools will be closed on Thursday, January 30.
  • Fulton County Schools:  Fulton Co. schools will be closed on Thursday, January 30.
  • Roswell:  all Roswell city offices and Parks and Recreation facilities are closed all day Wednesday. This is a change from their earlier plans.  Also, the city of Roswell has announced it is having abandoned cars towed off the roads to the nearest available parking lot.  There will be no charge involved.
  • Alpharetta:  all offices for the City of Alpharetta are closed today. Also, Republic Services has suspended garbage pickup for 24 hours.
  • Acworth:  all city offices are closed today.
  • Canton:  all city offices closed. An area of Canton has experienced a water main break and residents are asked to boil their water before using.  The boil water advisory and boil water FAQ from the City of Canton can be found online (both documents are PDFs).  Also, Highway 140 (Hickory Flat Highway) from Lower Scott Mill to Mountain Vista Boulevard is closed due to icy conditions and abandoned vehicles.
  • Marietta:  the Marietta city government re-opened at 12 noon.
  • East Point:  all city administrative offices are closed today.
  • College Park:  all city offices will remain closed today.
  • Douglas County:  all county offices and all external County services except for emergency services are closed today.
  • Newnan:  all city offices are closed today.
  • Fayetteville:  city offices are closed.
  • Forest Park:  city offices and traffic court are closed today.
  • Union City:  all city offices are closed.  Also, the city is towing abandoned vehicles that have been left on the shoulders of roads are being towed to Southside Wrecker, 4990 Jonesboro Road, (770) 964-8220.
  • Conyers:  all city offices are closed today. Plans are for city offices to re-open at noon on Thursday, January 30.
  • Lawrenceville:  all city offices are closed.
  • Duluth:  all non-emergency city offices are closed.
  • Johns Creek:  city offices are closed today. Court will be closed Thursday as well.
  • Sandy Springs:  city offices are closed today.  Also, the city says MARTA has suspended bus service today.
  • Suwanee:  city offices are closed today.
  • Woodruff Arts Center:  the Woodruff Arts Center and all related organizations are closed today. The Alliance Theater has canceled tonight’s performance of “The Geller Girls.”
  • Atlanta Braves:  the Atlanta Braves Country Caravan has canceled all stops for today.

Update:  10:30 a.m.

The Georgia Department of Transportation released a detailed list of locations where they have found and treated icy conditions on roads throughout Georgia.  GDOT warns motorists that icy conditions can easily recur at these locations and to take precautions if in the area.

Georgia Navigator (http://www.511ga.org/) also shows real-time accidents and travel conditions, although it does focus on the interstate system.

GDOT also says they have almost 300 workers clearing roads in the metro Atlanta area.

Update:  9:45 a.m.

DeKalb County Road Closings: DeKalb County sent us an updated list of road closings in the county.  This list is more up-to-date than the list they currently have posted on their web site.

  • State of Georgia offices will not open until noon today, on order of Gov. Deal
  • City of Atlanta Offices and Facilities
  • Cobb County government offices will open at 12:00 noon; all court-related offices and functions are closed all day; Cobb Community Transit operations have been suspended until further notice. For more detail, check the Cobb County website.
  • DeKalb County offices will open at 10:30 a.m.
  • Fulton County Offices and Facilities
  • Brookhaven City Hall and Municipal Court
  • Gwinnett County administrative offices will open at 10:00 a.m.; other county services are opening at various times or staying closed today.  Gwinnett County Transit has suspended operations today. Check the Gwinnett County website for more detail.

Road Closings

Ronald Reagan Parkway in Gwinnett County is closed until further notice.

Fulton County is de-icing a number of county roads. Crews are currently de-icing Flat Shoals Road from Old National Highway to the Union City line. Buffington Road is also set for de-icing.  Sand spreaders have been deployed to address ice on Cascade Road.
